Now that we are in Hurricane Season- OBX Housing is here to help you and your Renters after a storm…
OBX Housing is very active on our Facebook page that we post to quite frequently, especially during hurricanes and storms. OBX Housing posts information about closings and evacuations as well as re-entry information if we have a mandatory evacuation. If you have not already “liked” us on Facebook, please do to stay informed, especially during storm season on the Outer Banks.
In preparation for a storm, here are a few items we recommend to our Residents:
1. Secure all loose items outside the home that could blow around or away. If you don’t have a garage or outside shower in which to put your outside trash can(s) bungee cord them to a stable object like a piling.
2. If you plan to Evacuate, do not turn off the main breaker to your home. Doing so will cause mold to grow in the refrigerator so we do not recommend the power main be shut off. You can shut off your propane supply and/or your water supply, just be sure not to drain the water heater.
3. The Owners of the homes will decide if they want to have the windows boarded, most do not because they do not want nail holes in vinyl siding and trim. DO NOT BOARD up without the prior consent of the Landlord thru OBX Housing.
4. If you live in a low lying area such as Colington Harbour, please monitor the road conditions because Colington Road floods easily during periods of high winds and rain.
5. If you plan on staying in your home, be sure to stock up on water, batteries, food that does not have to be refrigerated or cooked, can opener, paper plates, bleach, trash, bags, etc.
All OBX Housing Residents have access to our website to their Tenant Portal. The portal is a valuable tool and is available to all OBX Housing Tenants to use to report maintenance and/or storm damages as well as permitting them to publish photos of your Outer Banks rental property so that we can share them with the Vendors, Insurance Adjustors and also the Landlord/Owner.
Outer Banks Rental homes often experience a lot of blown off siding, missing shingles, trees down, underpinning blown out and sometimes light fixtures ripped off by heavy winds during tropical storms and/or Hurricanes. Often we have been without electricity-last year during Hermine and Matthew some of us were without power for 1 to 3 days. Many times our roads flood either from excessive rains or high winds that blow in the Sound waters or Ocean overwash. Here are a few other websites to monitor during storms to keep you posted on what’s happening on the Outer Banks during storm season: The Outer Banks Voice and the Dare County website
