Who is responsible for Trash Collection on the Outer Banks?
If your rental home is located within the Town of Nags Head or the Town of Kill Devil Hills, then your trash collection is by the municipality. Southern Shores is serviced by Bay Disposal. Other areas of the Outer Banks such as Duck, Martin’s Point, Kitty Hawk, and Colington are subcontracted out to Dare County. Each municipality or Dare County sells and services the large, black trash receptacles that your trash must be placed in. The can must be pushed to the road for collection and be in the right of way. It must not have any items within a 5ft radius around the can or the mechanical arm of the truck cannot pick it up. The lid must be facing the street so it will open properly to dump. These cans cost anywhere between $90 and $100 and each Outer Banks residential rental home must have at least one can. When your home is built, they will provide you with one can. If that can is broken or stolen, you are responsible for repairing or replacing it. The cans can sometimes be repaired by Dare County or the Town but it is costly. An example is current $30-$40 for a replacement lid through Dare County but that is only available for newer cans because they are unable to get parts for the older trash cans.
Normally, Dare County or the Town will deliver a replacement can to the home provided they are paid in advance for the can. The typical cost is approximately $100.00. Payment must be delivered to the Town or to Dare County and then delivery days are typically on Wednesdays.
Recycling has become very popular along the Outer Banks. Southern Shores has always provided free curbside recycling and also provides the can for residents to use. Other areas of Dare County also have Recycling offered through Bay Disposal and the cost is approximately $13-$15 per month.
