OBX weather this past spring and early summer brought us a lot of heat but also a lot of rain!
Summertime brings us a lot of cars and tourists but so far into the 2018 season we have seen excessive August type temperature and heat indexes as well as lots and lots of rain! The torrential rains have caused residential street flooding in Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Colington and Kitty Hawk.
For the Outer Banks Landlords and Renters, this can mean insurance claims for flooding, personal properties damaged by wind and rain as well as damage to shingles and siding. As we all know, excessive rain and heat can mean wild growth of trees, shrubs, and grass. Some of us are finding that we have to cut our grass more than once a week and lots of weed, weed, weed pulling. Many homes have reported trees and shrubs scrapping the roof and siding of the homes due to excessive growth.
It is always best to for renters to keep things cut back so they don’t get out of control. It is also best to keep the areas around your home clear so that the sun and wind can keep them dry to prevent infestation of bugs, rodents, and snakes as well as so that your foundation can breathe and dry out.
There are products available at local big box stores as well as Ace Hardware that you can spray around your house once a year and it will help keep spiders, ants, and other pests away. It takes about 2 hours to dry and although it says once a year, local pest control companies recommend you do it 2 to 4 times per year. It’s an inexpensive way to keep insects and creepy crawlies from coming into your home!
