Receiving mail when renting an Outer Banks Long Term Rental
Once a new Tenant signs a Residential Rental Contract (Lease) for their new Outer Banks rental home and before they transfer the utility services for the property, they must determine how they are going to receive US mail. The options here on the Outer Banks are either getting a post office box at one of our local US Post offices or setting up residential mail delivery to your new home.
Here’s a list of local post offices and their contact information:
Nags Head Post Office, 100 Deering Street, Nags Head, NC 27949
Kill Devil Hills Post Office, 302 S. Virginia Dare Trail, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948
Kitty Hawk Post Office, 3841 N. Croatan Highway, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949
Duck Post Office, 1245 Duck Road, Duck, NC 27949
A mailbox is not a fixture of the rental home and is therefore not the Landlord’s responsibility to repair or replace if it gets damaged or breaks. Often, the previous renter will leave their mailbox up and in place when they move out and if that is the case then it’s a bonus for the new incoming Tenant!
Just keep in mind that it will be the responsibility of the Tenant to keep it in good working order while you are living at the home or the US Post Office could stop delivering your mail. When you go to the Post Office to set up the mail delivery, they can provide you with specifications for
your mailbox, specifically height so that the mail carrier can access it with ease.
